Branding & Marketing | Are They The Same?

Branding & Marketing – Are they the same?

The short answer is No … but they are closely related.

People use the words BRANDING and MARKETING almost synonymously…so what is the difference?

To quote James Heaton, “Branding should both proceed and underlie any marketing effort.”

Branding is the PULL (attraction + value) to your brand…

“Branding is the expression of the essential truth or value of an organization, product, or service. It is communication of characteristics, values, and attributes that clarify what this particular brand is and is not.” Heaton adds.

Heaton further shares, “A brand authentically represents itself in the world, staying true to itself and can directly support sales and marketing activities but it does not go so far as to state “buy me”. Instead, it gives a clear picture of what the brand is and why it exists and might invite the audience to explore more.”

Marketing is the PUSH (tactics that help to activate consumers and generate sales success)

Marketing includes tactical activities to encourage trial and growth of a brand – so people to engage or buy.

As Mr. Heaton says, “Marketing unearths and activates buyers. Branding makes loyal customers, advocates, even evangelists, out of those who buy.”
